Beautiful Libraries of the World

Those who read here or have read my older blog know that I frequently give Presurfer a hat tip. They have found a niche and I love that they have because they come up with some of the most interesting, fun, and unusual links. There are days when I really must restrain myself from linking more than one or two of their great finds. This one outdoes itself. It is a link to some of the world’s most beautiful libraries. The one shown below is the George Peabody Library in Baltimore, Maryland. I’ve chosen it as my exemplar because I’ve done genealogical research there and as beautiful as it looks in the picture, I can say that the picture does not come close to doing it justice. I learned about the Peabody when I was searching a family that had links back to the royal houses of England and France. I had a citation for a particular work that I could not find anywhere in print or in old library sources. Even the Salt Lake Genealogy Library (Family History Library) did not have this particular work on microfilm, which in itself was very unusual. In frustration, one day I picked up the phone and called the Library of Congress, got a very helpful clerk/librarian, who told me that the only place they knew of a copy was at the Peabody in Baltimore. It was one of those stories that ends up in a genealogist’s book of little miracles. You see, most of the years I was actively doing research, I lived in either California or South Carolina, but just weeks before the call to the Library of Congress, we had been transferred to :: drumroll :: Baltimore. As it turned out, I lived no more than 10 to 15 minutes from the Peabody. They had the manuscript I was looking for, which turned out to be a folio that had to be brought to me from the vaults. I spent days at this library and had the parking tickets to show for it. That is the big drawback, there is little parking nearby except meters on the street and as anyone who gets into research knows, when you are on the hunt, the last thing you notice is the time and the fact your meter is happily expiring down the street.
